  • Xe Pian Protected Area

The Xe Pian National Protected Area (NPA), established in 1993 and covering an area of 2,400 square kilometres, is considered to be one of the top three most biologically important protected areas in Laos. Rare wildlife species can be found in unique habitats, including wetlands with large water birds and areas of lowland forests hosting large mammals.

Venture into the area to enjoy ecotourism activities while knowing that your support helps to provide opportunities for local villagers. You can ride on the back of an elephant, opt for some trekking in the forest, canoe with a local guide through the wetlands in the rainy season, or simply relax and observe life in the wetlands.

    Trekking & Elephant Riding
Embrace your adventurous spirit in Xe Pian National Protected Area. This rich and sensitive ecosystem covers 2,400km2 and is one of Laos’s most important biological areas, home to rare wildlife, large water birds, wetlands and lowland forests.

Trekking here means you also support ecotourism and sustainable development for the local people. Ride on the back of an elephant, hike through the forest, or simply relax, kick back and relish the serenity.

At Ban Kiet Nong village at the edge of the wetlands, you will find a window to authentic Lao rural life. Only 1,000 people live here in traditional houses and work on subsistence farming and fishing. The village here has always had a relationship with working elephants; nowadays only seven elephants are left.

Ride one of these majestic beasts through the forest from Ban Kiet Ngong to the rocky summit of Phou Asa. Visit the mysterious ruins of a temple and enjoy the stunning view over the wetlands and forests of the Xe Pian.

    Cycling
Slow down, you’re on Southern Lao time now. Pedal along red dirt roads and silently pass rice paddy fields and leisurely grazing water buffalo. Squeeze your bike onto a two-person ferry to putter across the Mekong on your way to another ancient temple. And feel your leg muscles as you chug your way up a mountain, stopping off to bite into fresh fruit sold at colorful stalls, or to sip hot, freshly-ground local coffee and have a yarn with the sociable locals.

Hop on a bicycle to experience an authentic Southern Laos experience where you travel at your own pace, stopping to visit sights and explore activities as you choose. From leisurely island hopping to biking the mountainous terrain of the Bolaven highlands, cycling provides the perfect means to traverse the diverse region of Southern Laos.

Southern Laos is an up and coming cycling destination and therefore infrastructure for bicycling (shops, rental and maintenance) is still rare all around Southern-Laos.
